BMW: Trying To Make Sense Of It All

As you might be able to tell, this had rapidly descended into a week of BMW themed items. I’ll be honest, this wasn’t intentional, but once something has started there’s no reason to stop it.

Today I was reading about the forthcoming BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, revealed at this year’s Geneva Motorshow. To be perfectly honest, I’m struggling hugely to understand the point of this huge vehicle:

To put it into context, the old 740i in Tuesday’s ICAT was about 5 metres long. The new 6-Series Gran Coupe is just about dead on 5 metres in length, and only 65mm shorter than a contemporary 7-Series. BMW is marketing this machine as a four-door coupe; a concept which really goes against the very principle of what a coupe is, traditionally being a two-door bodyshell. But in reality, with quad openings, it is a saloon by any other name.

Which leads me to the further question of who exactly is this car aimed at? Pricewise, in the UK it’s going to start at £61,000 for the most basic (albeit still rather well specced model), whereas the slightly larger 7-Series costs from as little (!) as £57,000. I’m sure the ad men would say clearly the Gran Coupe is aimed at a much different customer; those who wish to drive themselves rather than be chauffeured. They might also add that the Gran Coupe is more rakish and stylish than the 7-Series, but when you consider them in profile I’m not convinced the difference is so marked:

This is the 7-Series. Though let me just check…

Yes there is clearly less headroom in the rear of the Gran Coupe, but unless you’re in the habit of driving around basketball players in top hats, I can’t really see it being an issue. The GC also has a few more droopy and swoopy bits, but they’re hardly poles apart. The engine choices are broadly similar, as are the transmission setups and the overall chassis underpinnings. Genuinely, for me, this is perhaps one market segment too far. However, this is not the first time BMW has strayed into the outer reaches of the car-buying market. Take the 5-Series GT as proof the Bavarians will often give you the answer to a question you’d never even dreamt of asking, let alone wrote down and sent off to their shiny headquarters.

BMW brands the 5-Series Gran Turismo as a Progressive Activity Sedan. What that actually means…I’m not sure. Size wise, again it’s knocking on the door of the magic 5 metre marker, with interior space bigger than 5-Series Touring and a bit more headroom than the X5 SUV. At £45k it’s a lot more expensive than the 5-Series Touring which starts at £32k, but level with the X5. Just without the 4×4 off-road capability of BMW’s established SUV. To try to make some sense of this, lets look at them all in profile:

This is a regular 5-Series saloon, and very nice it is too.

This is a 5-Series Touring. Also very nice, and great if you need to move dogs or wardrobes.

Here’s the 5-Series GT, which has both a saloon boot and a hatchback all in one. BMW borrowed this idea from Skoda. It also has a more swoopy coupe-like roofline compared to the saloon.

And this is the X5. The off-roader.

Any clearer? I didn’t think so. The key perhaps lies in the American market (as ever) where the 5-Series Touring didn’t prove to be particularly popular. The result being the bloated GT is the replacement for the regular estate 5-Series, though given the US market’s obsession with all things SUV, surely the X5 answers that question anyway? Although if that high, straight roofline of the regular X5 is cramping your style far too much, there is always this:

The X6. Urgh.

Yes, the X6. A 4×4 Sports Activity Coupe with a swept back roof and 4WD grubby bits. There’s also an M version should you feel the need to be truly vulgar about your personal wealth/ability to be taken in by marketing.

As I said earlier in the week, BMW used to be a company that produced similar looking saloons in different lengths. The above evidence makes it rather clear that those days are long gone. BMW is not concerned with making the best driver’s cars, it now seems more bothered about filling every little market niche, on the off-chance that one person might need a vehicle of that kind.

Even 10 years ago I would probably have been able to explain the brand rationale behind Bayerische Motoren Werke. These days, I’m really not so sure. I’m glad the company still produces little glimmers of awesomeness like the 1M, but given that the latest M5 features synthesised engine noises I worry that nothing is sacred in Munich anymore.


I Could Afford That / Classified Dreaming #4

It’s been a while since the last episode of ICAT/CD, mainly due to actually going out and buying real cars. But having owned the Polo for less than a month, ESM is intrinsically drawn back to the classifieds like a proverbial moth. This edition is, like the ham in my sandwich today, distinctly Bavarian in flavour. There is no defining reason, other than I had a crazy dream about putting an M3 engine into an 3-Series Touring the other night. Regardless, let us delve into the Black Forest gateaux of offerings on display:

I Could Afford That

What is it that make’s BMW such an effective brand? For decades it sold identical looking saloons, which increased in size and price as you moved up the simple model numbering system. They were always rear-wheel drive and had dashboards which were angled towards the driver. For generations, the advertising slogan was “The Ultimate Driving Machine” not this stupid “Joy” business. The examples below are all testament to the simpler times, before the X6 and 5-Series GT (urgh).

1993 BMW 318is Coupe – £500

I think you have to be a certain kind of person to want a burgundy coloured car. Personally, I would be more than happy to own one, but others detest this darker shade of red. Perhaps it’s because it was the colour of the jumpers at my primary school? Funnily enough, when this example rolled off the production line I was still in the very first stages of my education; was it really that long ago?!

Either way, I’m hugely drawn to this 318is Coupe for reasons I just cannot fathom. Maybe it’s because of the colour. Maybe it’s the pleasing honesty and friendliness of the seller in his advert. Or maybe it’s because it costs less than a new LED TV. It may only have 140bhp, it may only do 0-60 in 10 seconds, and it isn’t a straight-six engine, but it’s still going to be quicker than the latest LG or Sony Bravia.

Furthermore, I like the fact it has bright orange indicators, bare plastic lower trim and the original glovebox torch. From the advert, only the starter motor is the obvious issue. I contemplated emailing to ask for details of what else might be wrong, but I didn’t want to shatter the illusion. I’m happy to live in a world where you can get a small, maroon, BMW coupe (that works) for less than the price of a new television. Given the right attention, I’m sure it would outlast the planned obsolescence of the latest flatscreen too. I’m even a fan of the cloth interior, with its dainty 3-spoke steering wheel:

Verdict: Do you really need to ask? If it was closer, and I had the space, I’d already be drifting it around roundabouts.

2000 BMW M5 – £5,245

Make no mistake, this is the one. A genuine (as far as I can tell) E39 M5 in Le Mans blue. That means a 4.9 litre V8 producing just shy of 400bhp. It means 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. And it also means it happens to be one of my most favourite cars ever made.

The E39 M5 was BMW’s response to the Jaguar XJR and Mercedes E55 AMG. Until those two were released, BMW had convinced itself it didn’t need a specific supersaloon; the 540i would be more than sufficient to fend off any challengers. It wasn’t. The end result was the first V8 powered M5, using a 6-speed manual gearbox and some new, advanced (at the time) electronics to blow the competition away. Most importantly, it had an M Sport button, increasing the throttle response and stiffening up the steering (like a certain Fiat Panda). In all honesty, I could write for days and days about this car, but I should probably get down to the specifics of this individual vehicle for sale.

Admittedly it has a mileage north of the infamous 100,000 marker, but then it is 12 years old and does seemingly come with a warrant. Providing its been cared for during its life, the M5 shouldn’t really be any more troublesome than the regular 5-Series models it shared the factory with. The interior looks clean enough, with the pleasing two-tone leather and aluminium trim; no evil fake wood in here.

Quite frankly, this is a very special car in a superb colour combination with the best interior options. It is by far the cheapest E39 M5 on Pistonheads, which leads me to believe there might be something about to go wrong with it, but my heart tells me it would be worth the risk. So long as you ignore the group 20 insurance and the less than 20mpg fuel economy that is.

Verdict: It’d bankrupt me, one way or another. But at least I’d enjoy the ride whilst it lasted.

1999 BMW 740i – £2,495

In terms of sheer acreage of car on offer, this beast easily rivals the American offerings from previous editions of ICAT. However you slice it, at 5 metres long this is a big car. Suitably, this one is fitted with the 4.4 litre V8, serving up 282 bhp and a wafting 325 lb-ft of torque. More than enough to get you to that board meeting on time, leaving you free to enjoy a well deserved round of golf afterwards.

From viewing the advert, I’m immediately drawn to two things. Firstly, the fact it has a working original car phone. In the world where I can write this article on my iPhone, having a telephone tethered to your car is amusing in its simplicity, along with being fairly illegal. Secondly, the fact the seller spent £1,700 on new tyres and brakes reminds me just how expensive this puppy was, and still is, in terms of running costs. But then look at the sheer vastness of it again:

I’m pretty sure fitting new brakes and tyres wheels to a train would be expensive, which this thing is about as long as. The seller has struggled to get it into the above picture, that’s how big it is. Also, this angle highlights the rather pleasing BBS multispoke alloy wheels, and the Orient Blue coachwork which is so nearly black but isn’t. In addition, the mileage is low, it’s soon to have a new MOT and there’s this treasure of an interior:

A cassette player. Seriously? Granted that might be a Freeview ready TV next to it, but nestled amongst the imitation tree is a device for playing audio tapes. Surely that, and the complete toolkit in the boot, are worth the price of admission alone. The insides show this car’s age, but I’d put money on it all still working. Also, check who the dashboard is pointing at; the driver of course.

Verdict: A Volkswagen Jetta wouldn’t fit on my drive. Let me move the fence and get back to you.

Classified Dreaming

This section actually proved to be quite a lot harder than ICAT. The main problem being that, with the exception of a stupidly specified 7-Series perhaps, most BMWs tend to be relatively “normal” in price. Although it may now produce some nasty SUVs and crossover cars, to an extent BMW still produces saloons in various shapes and sizes. And coupes. So we begin where we started; with a small, red, 2-door BMW :

2011 BMW 1-Series M Coupe – £37,500

If you go back a few months, you may recall that the 1M won honours at the ESMCoTY2011 ceremony. Unfortunately, BMW never got in touch to collect their prize, but I’m not bitter. No, not bitter, but a little bit envious of anyone fortunate enough to be able to afford the manic M Coupe. Which begs the question, why on earth would someone want to sell it?

The seller says they’ve put this car before their “wife and kids” and is “exceptionally immaculate”. Good, very good. So why are you selling sir? It’s advertised as being the cheapest 1M in the UK, which it is, by virtue of £495. Putting that into an advert always smacks of desperation, which again just sends the cynical part of my brain into overdrive. I genuinely struggle to fathom why, if you could afford such a car in the first place, you would want to part company with it. Perhaps it’s being replaced by a new M5? An M3 GTS? Something else entirely maybe. Who knows. However, what did concern me even more was this photo:

Along with the sentence “washed by hand by myself every weekend using only the finest detailing products such as blackfire, zaino, jeff werkstatt”. Ah. We have a car detailer on our hands. Something which I’ve never been able to take seriously as a hobby. If you have an amazing performance car sat on your drive, why on earth would you want to spend every Saturday polishing it with microfibe cloths and rubbing it with clay? Verdict: Of course. And then not wash it for six months.
