The 2026 Hyundai Elantra N TCR Edition is the hot saloon we need

A road-going touring car, with a gigantic rear spoiler, that costs just £25,000? The petition to bring it to the UK starts now.

Canada has an awful lot going for it, from stunning scenery to a welcoming society, not to mention the maple syrup.

Now, the Great White North has another thing to celebrate, in receiving the Hyundai Elantra N TCR Edition.

It builds upon the already impressive Elantra N, taking direct inspiration from Hyundai success in TCR touring car competitions across the globe.

So, think of this as a classic motorsport special edition, giving a direct link between on-track performance and road-going ability.

For the uninitiated, the Elantra N features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Generating 280hp as standard, this can be temporarily boosted to 290hp using the wonderfully named Hyundai ‘N Grin Shift’.

Powering the front wheels, a six-speed manual (remember them?) is standard, with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission on the options list. Choosing the latter gains you the N Grin Shift mode, but both versions come fitted with an electronic torque-vectoring limited-slip differential.

Accelerating from 0-62mph takes 5.3 seconds, with a top speed in the region of 155mph.

It proves that, as with all efforts during the last ten years from Hyundai’s N department, the company does not mess around when it comes to performance.

The Elantra N TCR Edition ups the ante, adding the huge swan neck carbon fibre rear spoiler, which looks like it has literally been plucked from the racing version.

Other upgrades include lightweight 19-inch Hyundai Motorsport forged alloy wheels, and upgraded brakes with four-piston calipers on the front axle.

For the cabin, Hyundai has used a liberal amount of Alcantara, covering the sports seats, steering wheel, centre console, and even the hand brake lever. Oh, and the seat belts are blue, of course.

A new TCR Edition badge can be found on the boot, marking this out as a special model, just in case the massive aero appendage doesn’t give the game away.

Fans in South Korea, where the same car is sold as the Avante N TCR Edition, can even have an exterior decal kit to mimic the racing model’s livery.

The biggest kicker? Canadian enthusiasts will be able to purchase the Elantra N TCR Edition from $47,599 – equivalent to just £25,800 at current exchange rates.

At present, spending that amount of money in Hyundai’s UK lineup would barely get you behind the wheel of an entry level i30 hatchback. Yet our Canadian cousins get a road-going touring car, with a whopping whale tail.

Although the Australian market does not get the TCR Edition at present, buying a standard i30 Sedan N when Down Under would cost less than £28,000. A reminder that this hot four-door can be made in right-hand drive…

Given the UK’s lack of interest in compact saloons (unless they happen to wear a premium badge), and the maze of emissions rules and EV mandates, we can probably forget any ideas of the Elantra N TCR Edition appearing here.

Enjoy it, Canada.
