BTCC 2017 | Brands Hatch Grand Prix – What did we learn?

After another thrilling weekend of action, the British Touring Car Championship has a new name on the coveted trophy – Ashley Sutton. Sunday was certainly another day of twists and turns, but even Saturday’s qualifying session made headlines.

Sutton went into the weekend with a 10 point gap over nearest, and only realistic rival, Colin Turkington. A rain and red flag affected qualifying certainly went Sutton’s way as he qualified third behind Jack Goff and Aiden Moffat. Turkington’s BMW suffered electrical problems, not for the first time this season, and it meant he could only qualify in 17th.

Another disappointment for Turkington was that potential ally, in the form of teammate Rob Collard, had to withdraw from the weekend’s action after free practice as he was still suffering the effects of his heavy crash at Silverstone. Turkington’s other WSR teammate qualified a place behind him in 18th. While two of Sutton’s teammates qualified well down the pack, Jason Plato qualified in a handy 10th, although none of the teammates had particularly much impact on Sunday.

Race one certainly went Sutton’s way as Turkington struggled to make progress while Sutton took 3rd. Conditions appeared tricky at the start of the race as the track was damp, but drying. Astonishingly, no safety car was needed throughout the race, although Goff lost it at Paddock Hill bend on the opening lap and Adam Morgan had a few encounters with the barriers too. By lap 6, the cars on the slick tyres were starting to go quicker than those on the wet versions. The race was generally quite good, with the top 3 of Moffat, Tom Ingram and Sutton challenging each other well and by lap 10 they had a 15 second gap to 4th.

Towards the end while Sutton was, stupidly, considering what was at stake, attacking Ingram for 2nd, Turkington who’d make his way up to 12th started to lose places and after a final lap incident with Matt Simpson. He finally finished a lowly 15th to gain a solitary point. The gap to Sutton was now 24 points. (more…)

BTCC 2016 – Brands Hatch Indy Reviewed and Rated

BTCC is back, and EngageSportMode’s dedicated correspondent has also returned to action. Here’s his rundown of who shined and who flopped on the first weekend of racing. 

(C) BTCCSix newcomers, various driver changes, a new manufacturer and a major regulation change and the British Touring Car Championship was ready for action in 2016. Once again, the series started at Brands Hatch on the Indy Circuit, which I’ve been less than complimentary about in the past. However, this year was certainly an improvement on the previous snooze-fests we’ve had to endure.

(C) BTCCRace One (1st – Ingram, 2nd – Shedden, 3rd – Neal)
Tom Ingram secured pole on Saturday for the first time and made no mistake in the opening race of the day with a lights to flag victory, despite a safety car to recover Alex Martin’s heavily damaged car after taking action to avoid a spinning Hunter Abbott. The mid-race battle for fourth between several cars was certainly entertaining, finally culminating in Ash Sutton emerging as victor ahead of teammate Josh Cook and Rob Collard, who had earlier collided with his teammate, Sam Tordoff. Being a fly on the wall in the WSR garage post-race sounded like the place to be if you believe ITV’s coverage. The opening race of the season was less conservative than normal and brought a new team and driver to the top step of the podium.

(C) HondaRace Two (Shedden, Neal, A Smith) A formidable Honda 1-2 for Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal come the end of the race looks ominous for the rest of the season, as they were rarely troubled and looked in cruise control after the second lap. After scrapping the fastest-lap starting grid used last season, and reverting back to the first race finishing positions, Ingram made another good start as he retained the lead. A fast-starting Collard raced through into second and closed in on Ingram on the second lap. However, as Collard pulled a move down Ingram’s inside, contact took place, sending Collard into a spin and leaving Ingram with damaged suspension. Perhaps a bit more could have been given and taken on both sides. Motorbase duo Andrew Jordan and Mat Jackson worked well together, taking several positions working in tandem. It’ll be interesting to see how they progress over the season. The end of the race was spiced-up by several cars going off the track, some twice, after fluid on the track, but this didn’t stop the Hondas coming through convincingly. (more…)

BTCC 2015 – Brands Hatch GP | Reviewed and Rated

After months of close racing, the 2015 British Touring Car Championship came down the wire to decide who would be the winner. ESM’s BTCC Correspondent sums it all up.

2015 BTCC Brands Hatch GPGordon Shedden did his best to lose a 23 point advantage going in to Brands Hatch, but he managed to just hold on to take his second British Touring Car Championship. Shedden naturally took all the headlines, but once again Mat Jackson was seriously impressive with two race victories and a second place.

It was Jackson who completed a hat-trick of pole positions, albeit with no weight. Aron Smith lined up second, Adam Morgan third, Shedden fourth, Colin Turkington fifth and Shedden’s nearest challenger Jason Plato, sixth. Race One was a non-event despite a safety car to rescue Stewart Lines’ stricken car, a big smash for Alex Martin and an amazing overtake from Aiden Moffat on Hunter Abbott via the grass. Jackson strolled home over the line with Smith and Morgan remaining second and third. The BMR duo of Turkington and Plato had jumped Shedden, but a point here and there wasn’t going to make any difference.

2015 BTCC Brands Hatch GPRace Two however, provided the set up to the final drama. Tom Ingram got a great start off the line as Smith bogged down, but Jackson once again established a sizeable early race lead. However, the safety car was needed at the end of lap one as a tank slapper from Martin Depper across the front of Rob Austin resulted in a sizeable collision. By lap 8, Shedden had actually slipped a little down the pack from his high teens starting position to 16th, but at the front it was much closer than the opening race with Jackson suffering from soft tyres and full ballast.
